there are so many reasons why i don’t live in the u.s. any more. why i can barely stand coming back here at all. but i do it to see my grandma because she is the one reason that it remains difficult for me to live abroad. i’ve spent the last couple of weeks cleaning [...]

i am not a fan, normally, of days that commemorate something. i don’t celebrate mother’s day or valentine’s day, for instance. i feel that there is something deeply wrong if one needs a holiday to remember to show one’s appreciation for those you love. i am finding myself feeling similarly about yom an nakba this [...]

an amazingly beautiful, experimental film by annemarie jacir. it shows the hatred and racism directed at faculty who teach in the middle east studies program there through these racist messages that you hear on the answering machine. the juxtaposition of those messages against the backdrop of the footage, as well as kamran rastegar’s beautiful music, [...]

bokra begins the celebration of al quds as a capital of arab culture. last year it was damascus. i have mixed feelings about these festivals because whether it is damascus or al quds how many arabs are prevented from traveling to participate if they had the money and wanted to go? i was not sure [...]

i find it rather shocking that palestinian and pro-palestinian bloggers are salivating over this new short animated video by yoni goodman who was the director of animation for the academy-award nominated film waltz with bashir. it is produced by some new project called the closed zone, which is affiliated with gisha, an israeli organization [...]
